The Ottawa History Hub
The Ottawa History Hub is a celebration of the history of Ottawa, Ontario. More than just a municipal history project, the OHH is a narrative-driven podcast history of the Ottawa area, putting its history in context. As such, we’re including a history podcast, reviews of books about the history of Ottawa, reviews of historical activities, like museums, and historical walks. If you’re interested in the history of Ottawa, I hope that you can find something here.
As a note, the history of Ottawa didn’t start when the city was proclaimed in 1855, there was plenty that happened before then. The city limits include a great many communities that have often been considered as outside of the city but part of the region, and there’s the Quebec side of the river that’s very much a part of the National Capital Region (NCR) and community. This podcast focuses on the history of the Ottawa area, with a very loose interpretation of what is meant by the term “Ottawa Area”.
Introduction to the Podcast
Books About Ottawa History
Historical fiction is one of the most popular genres of literature out there. I’ve curated a list of books about the history of Ottawa, predominantly fiction and some non-fiction. The difference between historical fiction and regular fiction usually depends on how far back in time you go, so not all the Ottawa fiction is “Historical” with a capital “H”. The reviews attached are fair and there are links as to where you can buy the books. The price that I’ve listed is the price at the time of review, and may not be accurate a day later.
Activities for History Fans
Ottawa has how many museums? A lot! Some are museums outright, some are historic parks or sites, there’s lots of places for a history fan to go. There are also a lot of walking tours of the city, some of which may be of interest to you, and some might not be what you’re looking for. Here are reviews of some of the sites and activities if you’re wondering what to do with some spare time!
